Garbage Truck Overturned, Drivers Leg Amputated Reporting Carey Codd PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) ― With a partially amputated leg, a woman survived and was hospitalized after a garbage truck fell on her in Pembroke Pines on Friday. It was a horrifying scene. Gwendolyn Hightower, 40, the driver of the "All Service" garbage truck, was pinned underneath it for more than an hour on Friday.В She was driving the truck from a passenger's side control, when it flipped. "When the vehicle started to roll over," Pembroke Pines Sgt. John Gazzano said, "she was thrown from the vehicle, ended up underneath it and it landed on its side." Rescuers tried desperately to free Gwendolyn. They realized they needed highly skilled surgeons to do the job – so out of the operating room and onto the scene – the team was choppered out to the wreck at Taft and 140th in Pembroke Falls. "She was hollering, and I didn't know her leg was underneath of there," said Alex Wright.В Wright claims he was the one driving the truck, not Hightower. He says they had just finished their route in the area when he went to make a U-turn with the truck. That's when the truck toppled over, and fell on top of the victim. "There was nothing else I could do, but just sit there and try to comfort her and tell her 'hold on, everything is going to be all right." Shawn Hallich, an assistant fire marshal, said "Obviously, she was entangled in the wreckage and they had to bring a surgical team out to do a surgical procedure to free her from the vehicle." Gwendolyn's right leg below the knee was tangled in the twisted wreck. В The only way to free her was to amputate part of her leg while a tow truck hoisted up the wreck. Witnesses said it was the quick work of rescuers and surgeons that saved her. Kari Giannomoros of Pembroke Pines said, "I think if it wasn't for them responding so quick in getting to the scene, she might not have made it." After an hour and 20 minutes trapped under the truck, Gwendolyn finally made it to the hospital and right into the operating room. As she recovers, investigators will determine what caused the garbage truck to tip over.
