Candover Valley Gardening Club - Welcome
Candover Valley Gardening Club was founded in 1974 to encourage, improve and extend the members' knowledge of all branches of horticulture. It is open to everyone and new members are all always welcome. We are affiliated to the Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies Activities during the year include a programme of talks and social events, garden visits in summer, both local and further afield, a plant sale, social gatherings and an annual open show in July. Members also take part in a variety of fundraising activities throughout the summer. Our base is the Village Hall at Preston Candover in the heart of Hampshire's beautiful Candover Valley a few miles north of Alresford. Indoor meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. Soils in the area are predominantly chalk and clay giving stark contrasts in drainage. Plants which favour alkaline conditions do well, including geraniums, clematis and other flowering shrubs, such as the viburnums. The presence of flint can make digging difficult and can affect the growth of root crops.
