Caterpillar's solution to make motor grader easier to use Caterpillar's solution replaces all the levers and the steering wheel with two joysticks. Caterpillar officials say this is the most significant change to motor graders in 30 years since hydraulics replaced mechanical operations. Cat says the joystick configuration does not significantly increase the motor grader's purchase price. The joysticks move, twist and have a series of buttons to guide the machine and blade. The left joystick controls wheel-turn and articulation. Unlike a steering wheel, that joystick will not return to neutral, or straight, position when the operator lets go. Instead, it holds the turning angle until the operator returns the joystick to neutral. The stick also is aligned with the front wheels. As with a steering wheel, the operator knows how far the wheels are turned by the position of the joystick. Cat officials say they planned to leave the steering wheel in the cab for operators uncomfortable with the joystick concept.
